Barrowland - Big Country 1983
The Barrowland Ballroom is a dance hall and music venue located in Glasgow, Scotland. The original building opened in 1934 in a mercantile area east of the city centre. The Barras street market, after which the area and the ballroom are named, continues until the present day. The building was largely destroyed by fire in 1958, leading to a complete rebuild. The rebuilt ballroom opened on Christmas Eve 1960. The front of the building is decorated with an animated neon sign, believed to be the biggest of its kind in the UK. In more recent years the ballroom has become a major concert venue with a capacity of around 2,100 people, known for its acoustics and its sprung dance floor. Big Country are a Scottish rock band formed in Dunfermline, Fife, in 1981. The height of the band's popularity was in the early to mid 1980s, although it has retained a cult following for many years since. The band's music incorporated Scottish folk and martial music styles, and the band engineered their guitar-driven sound to evoke the sound of bagpipes, fiddles and other traditional folk instruments. They famously played the Barrowland s at Hogmanay in 1983 which was recorded and later released as The Home Coming .
