The Apollo was a music venue at 126 Renfield Street in Glasgow city centre, Scotland. It operated from 5 September 1973 until closure on 16 June 1985 and was Glasgow's leading music venue during this period. The Apollo was a re-brand of the previous Green's Playhouse in the same building. The Who played the venue on Wednesday and Thursday 16/17 October 1975, supported by The Steve Gibbons Band, to promote their The Who by Numbers album. The tour began on 3 October 1975, ended on 21 October 1976 and consisted of concerts split between North America and Europe. Despite being named after The Who by Numbers album, few songs from that record were performed live during the tour. It began with a European leg, which introduced a laser lighting display. A North American leg followed and set indoor concert attendance records. The Who returned to America in 1976 after playing four shows in Europe. The leg set indoor concert attendance records. The opening show in Boston came to an end when legendary drummer Keith Moon collapsed on stage after playing two songs. The next day, he seriously injured himself and nearly bled to death. After performing at UK football stadiums in the middle of the year, they returned to North American for more concerts. After their show in Miami, Moon was hospitalised for over a week. He managed to complete the tour with the rest of the group, but these were his last public concerts before tragically dying of a drug overdose in 1978.
