The Greyhound (Croydon)
The Greyhound pub in Croydon was a major live music venue opposite Fairfield Halls and, in its heyday, David Bowie performed there...Roxy Music was the support act. Writing in the book Rockin' Around Croydon , Dave Holman told the author, Chris Groom: "The David Bowie gig stands out. I remember seeing The Groundhogs who seemed to be everywhere at the time. And there was the Edgar Broughton Band , the Alex Harvey Band , Jon Hiseman's Colosseum and then later on Tempest , Stackridge and, oh, you name them ... I went almost every week. One of the earliest gigs was Rory Gallagher ; it was the first time I saw him play live; he just blew me away." It is said that Mott the Hoople heard Bowie sing All The Young Dudes and asked him at the bar afterwards if they could record the song. It eventually became a top ten hit for the band. The Greyhound closed for business in the late 1980s and was refurbished and re-opened as The Blue Orchid . The building is still standing, awaiting redevelopment. The graphic on the front of this t-shirt is a replication of a flyer from the tail end of 1977 advertising upcoming gigs.
